About this event
Celebrate Halloween season with Hike + Write!
Bryce Bullins, a UC PhD candidate who teaches courses in horror films as well as Gothic and 19th century American literature, and Lara Wardlow, Cincinnati Parks Naturalist, will give informal talks and lead a writing activity as we stroll through Eden Park's memorial groves with stops at its allegedly haunted gazebo and Ohio River overlook.
This walk will examine the gothic tradition of the forest in some of the earliest works of American literature. We'll explore why it is that nature inspires both peace and fear in us and how we use natural spaces to create memories, meaning, and myths.
Costumes not required, but we won't be disappointed if you show up as a 1920s bootlegger or your favorite literary ghost. We'll meet at the Spring House Gazebo by Mirror Lake on Eden Park Drive. Parking is available on Fulton.
Whether you’re a proficient outdoorsperson or new to the outdoors, we’d love to have you join us.
Hike + Write is a series of programs that will bring together UC writers and Cincy Parks naturalists to explore outdoor/wild spaces throughout the city.
Hike + Write is for anyone who
wants to spend time outdoors hiking or hanging out by the fire
is interested in learning skills like identifying native plants, starting a fire, or building a shelter
is curious about the history and ecology of Cincinnati
is interested in thinking, talking, and writing about the natural world and our place in it
